A frequency reconfigurable planarmonopole antenna for fifth-generation (5G) mobilecommunication terminal equipment is presented. Theproposed antenna uses a meandered monopole, branchresonance and other techniques to make the antennaresonant in multiple frequency bands. The antenna iscompact in size (115 mm × 55 mm × 0.8 mm) and has alongitudinal length less than one-tenth of the resonantwavelength (working at 1.79 GHz). The pin diode isdesigned between the planar meandered monopoleantenna and branch. The current path of the highfrequencycurrent on the antenna can be easilycontrolled by controlling the DC bias voltage of thediode, and the operating frequency of the antenna isswitched between three frequency bands. The antenna isfed directly through a 50 Ω matched transmission line.The measured data of the antenna in the anechoicchamber show good consistency with simulation data.The radiation pattern of the antenna shows goodomnidirectional characteristics and good frequencycharacteristics, with a maximum radiation gain of 13.6dBi. Experimental results demonstrate that the antennacan meet the design requirements of 5G communication.
