The satellite channel propagation dynamics is a key element in system design and has to be taken into consideration in the implementation of propagation impairment mitigation techniques. Interfade duration modeling is a challenging issue concerning to fade dynamics. The Universidad Politécnica de Madrid has many years of experimental data collected from several satellite propagation campaigns—Italsat, Eutelsat HB 13A, KA-SAT, and more recently Alphasat—in theKaandQ/Vfrequency bands, and results on interfade dynamics have been gathered along the years. Until now, there is not an accepted model to estimate the distribution function of interfade duration. Some interfade duration modeling approaches have been published which describe its statistical distribution with a combination of more than two mathematical functions. In this communication, a modeling effort is presented where the precision of approximating the experimental distributions with a combination of two- or three-term log-normal distributions is compared. The parameters obtained in each case are given for the above- mentioned data set. The results show that both approaches result in a good approximation of the empirical data, although with different ranges of applications.
