Building bridges brings communities together. Two unusual designs should do just that - and become iconic landmarks. Engineers and architects are adapting traditional designs of movable bridges to meet the changing demands of users, urban regeneration and energy policy. Some bridges lift, others rotate, retract, curl or tilt. "There are more ways a bridge can open than you could possibly think," says Angus Low, a director at engineering consultancy Arup.
