Composite materials have come to play an indispensable role in just about every field in which they have been used. Sports, and motorsport in particular, have taken advantage of the weight and strength benefits offered by these materials. But most of the applications have been based on composites of carbon fibres in epoxy resins that are subject to highly expensive, labour-intensive processing methods. This has prevented them from seeing much use in the automotive industry, except on extremely high-end vehicles. However, various factors look set to combine to bring a new range of composites into the mainstream automotive market.
