Business Cycles and Gender Diversification: An Analysis of Establishment-Level Gender Dissimilarity

Much has been made of the recent recession being a "man-cession"; however, the empirical work on this topic tends to focus on job losses or unemployment rates. We extend this work to consider the impact of business cycles on occupational segregation, building upon recent work on long-run time trends in gender-related occupational segregation in the United States (Tomaskovic-Devey et al. 2006). Consistent with Tomaskovic-Devey et al. (2006), we find that gender-related occupational segregation has declined over the years 1966-2010. At the same time we find that recessions interrupt this trendrnconsiderably by increasing gender-related occu pational segregation via firm downsizing and restructuring.
