SHIP SMOKESTACKS EMIT UNEXPECTED POLLUTANTS

A new study has demonstrated that exhaust plumes from ships at sea emit a different mix of pollutants than previously thought. In the new study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research-Atmospheres (DOI 10.1029/2008JD011300), the measurements indicate that compared with previous data, ship emissions contain twice as much black carbon and add more pollutants and climate-changing particulate matter to the atmosphere. The NOAA ship Ronald H. Brown carried a complete lab housed in containers on its decks. The lab included a nozzle arm used to grab samples of ship emissions from the air so the researchers could measure the components.
