During September Cathay Pacific Airways took further steps towards renewing its long-haul fleet by signing firm orders with both Airbus and Boeing (adding to Cathay Pacific Announces Long Haul Fleet Renewal, September, p20). Tony Tyler, Chief Executive of Cathay Pacific Airways and John Leahy, Chief Operating Officer Customers, Airbus, signed an order for 30 A350-900 XWBs in Hong Kong on September 16, firming up a Letter of Intent produced on August 4. The airliners will be powered by the Rolls-Royce Trent XWB engines and operated principally on routes to Europe. To date, Airbus has recorded 558 firm orders from 34 customers for the A350 XWB.
