MCAS Futenma to be Relocated

On May 27 the United States and Japan agreed in principle to relocate MCAS Futenma, Okinawa. The base is currently located in a densely populated area of the island and its future has been subject to intense political debate within Japan concerning safety, operational requirements, noise impact, environmental concerns and effects on the local community. The replacement facility will be in the Camp Schwab Henoko-saki area and adjacent waters, and a study on the configuration and construction of the new base will be completed by the end of August. In addition, around 8,000 Marines and 9,000 family members will be moved to Guam, while the use of Japanese bases on the mainland and US facilities on Guam for training is being looked at to reduce the impact on the Okinawans.
