One of the reasons for the efforts to develop an indigenous Su-30 Flanker version in China was the missing multi-role performance of a combat jet in the country's forces. The JH-7, with its long and troubled development during the late 1980s, was always in real danger of not fulfilling the aspiration for it to become a true multi-role fighter-bomber suitable for both People's Liberation Army aviation branches.
