DREWRY'S EAST-WEST AIRFREIGHT PRICE INDEX, JUNE '17

Airfreight rates rebounded in June after a slight decline in May, according to Drewry's East-West Air Freight Price Index. The average rate in June rose 1.1 percent from May to US$2.81 and increased 1.1 percent, as well, compared to June 2016. The index also increased from May's seasonal dip to stand at 86.6 (based on a value of 100 for May 2012). The index still stands below its 2017 peak in January, but is about 1 percent above the June 2016 index. According to Drewry research analyst Shakin Praveen, "a surge in the freight tonne kilometers outlines a strong market" and should support higher airfreight rates in July.
