The two majors have decided to call on consultants to weigh prospects on blocks 5A and 6A before a potential trade of the blocks.rnAccording to our sources, the China National Petroleum,rnCorp (CNPC) and Malaysia's Petronas have hired consultants to study the potential of blocks 6 and 5A in Sudan. The decision was taken during a visit of CNPC's new chief executive, Jiang Jiemin, to Khartoum between Nov. 17-19.rnUnder an agreement between the government, CNPC and Petronas, the Chinese are to acquire a stake in Petronas'block 5A in exchange for a holding on its own block 6. As a result, the consultants will have to assess the oil prospects of the two blocks.rnBlock 6, which is wholly owned by CNPC at present, pumps roughly 40,000 bpd and work has been underway for several months on increasing that output to 75,000 bpd. An oil pipeline is being built to connect the field to an existing pipeline that carries oil to Port Sudan for export.
