CNPC and Petronas to be scrutinised by redoubted oil industry auditor Alex Stewart International

After three years of intense lobbying (Africa Intelligence, 08/05/18), South Sudanese President Salva Kiir has given in to Alex Stewart International (ASI). On 18 February, he agreed to award a contract for an audit of the country's oil industry to the company, which is headed by Argentinian-American dual national Enrique Segura and has already worked for the governents of Gabon and Chad. The South Sudanese oil sector, which is in a decrepit state after years of under-investment, produces barely 100,000 bpd despite being the government's sole revenue earner. The two leading operators, China National Petroleum Co (CNPC) and its Malaysian partner Petronas, will now have to open their books to ASI's investigators.
