World Bank brings power to regions in political turmoil

A month after his re-election, Cameroon’s head of state Paul Biya managed to pull in a new $150 million World Bank loan on December 13 to extend the country’s power grid to remote areas. A large part of the money will be put towards bringing power to 417 communities with a combined population of over one million people in the Etreme North, East, Northwest and Southwest regions of the country. The latter two are Cameroon’s Englishspeaking regions that have been home to mounting unrest over the past two years led by separatist movements.
