Lockheed Vega to fly again

At marana airport in Tucson, Arizona, Lockheed Vega NC 12288, is in the early stages of a rebuild to fly at Skywords Aviation. There are currently no airworthy examples of the sleek, 1927 monoplane, which was designed byjack Northrop and Gerrard Vultee and flown to glory by record breaking pilots Amelia Earhardt and Wiley Post. Rick Barter of Skywords says: "The airplane last flew in the early 1980s. It was in storage at Douglas, Arizona, until we picked it up in August 2010." This particular Vega c 161 was originally owned by the chief engineer of Lockheed, Richard Von Hake. After being laid off by the company during a reorganisation in June 1932, Hake acquired a Vega fuselage, and gathered all the parts neccesary to finish the machine. Completed in March 1933, it was operated by Braniff Airways, from 1934-39.
