Trying out the Virginia Mk VII

Sir, Thank you for the September issue of Aeroplane and congratulations to Martyn Chorlton on the Virginia Database. It is mentioned that my father flew the prototype Mk VII in Aug 1925 to establish whether the aircraft handling had been improved. He was on IX Sqn at Manston having been at Bircham Newton on Avro Aldershots, a large single engine bomber that earlier had stability problems. I was told by him that Roy Chadwick, the Avro designer, had applied minor sweep to the wings to reduce wander and increase stability. Hence when Vickers chief test pilot "Tiny" Schofield was indisposed my father was asked to try out the Mk VII.
