As air events go, the opening of New York's Idlewild Airport in summer 1948 was a big one. For fully nine days, the International Air Exposition showcased the best of US military and civil aviation - and what a lot of it there was, symbolising American post-war might. Yet, even in front of patriotic crowds naturally impressed by their country's latest fighters, bombers and transports, the Brits performed superbly.
