There are times when contemporary descriptions in the British specialist press of certain indigenous aeroplanes seem, with hindsight, a trifle optimistic in their positivity. Sometimes this might, to put it bluntly, be put down to a degree of jingoism. On other occasions, especially - but not exclusively - in wartime, there was a lack of official information available, which, when combined with a natural desire not to do down the efforts of our aeronautical industry, led to reporting that now comes across as a little wide of the mark.
