Sustaining capital cost / expenditure, abbreviated as sustainingrncapex or Susex, is a project cost item which is sometimes forgottenrnand often disliked. To many it is unknown, and it may be (partly)rnhidden in other operating cost items. The relation – and therndifference – with repair and maintenance costs is not always clearrnand may inadvertently lead to incomplete cost estimates.rnThis paper explores several facets of sustaining capital and aims atrnclarifying some of these issues for alumina refinery projects.
