The importance of regular suppressive treatment in asthma is nownbeing challenged. Boushey and colleagues (1) showed that mild asthmancould be controlled by intermittent courses of corticosteroids, and studiesnhave shown that combinations of inhaled corticosteroids (ICSs) andna long-acting bronchodilator with a fast onset of action can be effectivenwhen used both regularly and on an as-needed basis (2, 3).
