AMERICAN NIGHTMARE

At nearly 10m sq km, over 300m people, the largest economy and second largest democracy (after India) in the world, the US is also one of the world's most ethnically diverse nations. The combination of these factors makes it arguably the leading economic, political and cultural force on earth. Since 2001 the Republicans have seen their man at the top of this powerful nation, in the form of the much-criticised George Walker Bush. In a few weeks from now, the world will know which new president will be sworn in this coming January after the country goes to the polls on 4 November. But as it stands on the brink of fresh leadership, the US is not the force it once was. The economy is weak and vulnerable, and the electorate disillusioned and uncertain as to what the future holds.
