In the final throes of the Labour party leadership election it almost seemed that there would be a more conciliatory tone from the runaway winner Jeremy Corbyn. This was instantly squashed with the appointment of John McDonnell MP as shadow Chancellor, a man with views further left than JC himself. Watch out for calls for mass nationalisation, a 60p tax rate and fantasy targets for reducing tax evasion from the wholly extraordinary £120bn tax gap claimed by the Corbyn economic manifesto. Apparently calculated by the redoubtable chartered accountant Richard Murphy, no less. Meantime, proving that it always makes sense to have feet in all camps, JC's new shadow cabinet is graced with two members who can claim close connections to the Big Four firms.
