A systematic review showed, with moderate certainty, that electrotherapy and acupuncture decreased or delayed opioid use in patients who had total knee-replacement (TKA); however, the researchers found low certainty that the treatments reduced the patients' pain, according to a study in JAMA Surgery. Dario Tedesco, MD, at Stanford University, CA, and the University of Bologna, Italy, and colleagues, reviewed 39 randomized clinical trials, involving 2391 patients and comparing nonpharmacologic interventions and standard of care, including preoperative exercise, cryotherapy, continuous passive motion, electrotherapy, and acupuncture. http://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamasurgery/article-abstract/2647847
