Life History of an Omani Woman Nursing Pioneer and NurseLeader

This study explored the lived experiences of an Omani nursing pioneer andnurse leader whose life and career have evolved amidst a time of rapidmodernization in Oman that began in 1970, widely known as the OmaniRenaissance. The life history method of qualitative research was usedto examine personal and institutional facilitators and barriers toprofessional development, as well as aspects of the history of thenursing profession and healthcare in Oman during this time. This paperprovides insight about the successes and challenges she faced inchoosing nursing and along her career path. Inductive thematicanalysis revealed three dominant themes: opportunity, visionary, andnurse; with subthemes: national identity, country building, nursingpioneer, leadership, perseverance, resilience, mentors, advocacy,caring, and fulfillment. Conclusions from this study are thatopportunities, personal attributes, and motivations shaped decisionsabout employment and played a role in overcoming barriers toprofessional development in the workforce.
