Patients undergoing an orthopaedic procedure should have a reasonable expectation of when they can expect to achieve certain postoperative functional milestones. One study found that patients with meniscal tears had a low level of comprehension about the nature of their injuries, and their expectations for their surgical procedure often were unrealistic [ ]. Another study found that patients undergoing elective hip and knee arthroplasty who received a preoperative educational course outlining details of the upcoming procedure had expectations that more-closely coincided with those of the surgeons, resulting in improved patient satisfaction compared to those who did not complete the course [ ].
