The National Institute on Aging (NIA) at the National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services, supports biomedical and behavioral research with a life-span focus. The Institute is focused on helping with understanding the mechanisms and purposes of longer lives. There is attention to understanding basic processes of aging, improving prevention and treatment of diseases and conditions common in later years, and improving the health of older persons. NIA is also the lead in federal funding of research on Alzheimer’s disease. NIA supports the training and career development of scientists focusing on aging research and the development of research resources. This symposium, meant for junior faculty and emerging scholars, provides an update on the latest research findings from the NIA followed by a brief update on funding mechanisms. An opportunity is provided to meet and consult with representatives from the Office of the Director and extramural staff. Learning objectives: 1) describe the NIA mission and extramural divisions supporting basic, clinical, neuroscience, and behavioral and social research; 2) describe recent research findings from projects funded by NIA; 3) meet with representatives of NIA.
