桐城派经世致用思想与近代中国外语教育启蒙研究

     

摘要

经世致用思想既是桐城派的文风,也是一种教育传统。清朝末年,国家面临内忧外患,晚期桐城派发扬了经世致用的思想传统,他们引进西学,译书办报;设立方言学校,派遣学生留美学习,创下中国留学教育史先河。也为早期外语教育储备了师资。不仅如此,他们还在传统书院中设立了格物、算术等西学课程,又开设西文、东文学堂,延请外文名师授课,亲自出国游学考察等等,推动了中国教育从传统向现代的转型,为近代中国外语教育的启蒙与发展铺设了道路,也为当前我国外语教育的规划提供了借鉴。%Reality -based ideology is both a writing style and an educational tradition to Tongeheng School. At the end of Qing dynasty, the late Tongeheng School developed their reality - based ideology to full extent when the nation was faced with both domestic problems and foreign invasion. They introduced western learning to people, translated books from foreign language to Chinese and published newspaper. They set up foreign language learning institute, and sent students abroad to learn western science and technology, which not only started the overseas education in Chinese history, but also helped to train foreign language teachers. What' s more, they added western learning courses like physics, arithmetic to traditional Chinese courses, and invited famous native scholars to teach English and Japanese. Some of them even traveled to Japan to explore Japanese educational system. These reality - based ideology and practices promoted the modern transformation from traditional Chinese education model, laid a solid foundation for the beginning of Chinese foreign language education, and provided reference for future language education policy.
