The past five years assutned the best and the most steady economic development oeriod in Sichuan Province ever since the founding of the new China in 1949. From 1991 to 1996, the provincial GDP increased by 0. 73 fold. The objective of double and redouble of the provincial GDP was fulfilled ahead of time in 1996. Over thc past five years, the province had exerted great efforts to improvc infrastructure such as agriculture, energy, transportation and telecommunication, and invested the largest capital to hydropower exploitation. As a result, a large numbcr of hydropower projects were listed among the provincial key ones to be under construction. The undertakings of bank,security and ensurance also witnessed a promotion by leaps and bounds. From 1992 to 1996, a total of 4, 200 contracts have been reached to establish foreign-fund enterprises with the capital invested standing at US 1. 5 billion.
