Tess of the D'urbervilles, one of Hardy's masterpieces, is a bright pearl in the treasure house of the world literature. In view of the great influences of the Bible and the Greek classics exerted on Hardy and his works, this paper attempts to reexamine this world canon form the perspective of archetypal criticism, with the aim at finding out the reasons for the intense tragic effect this novel evokes on readers and for its everlasting charm in the world literature.
