The Enlightenment Brought by Undershaft in Major Barbara

摘要

In Bernard Shaw's play Major Barbara, the arm dealer, Barbara's father Undershaft is usually considered a totally evil character. In this paper, it is argued that Undershaft is a character of the greatest importance. Though hardly the spokesman of the author Bernard Shaw, this sophisticate does represent Bernard to some extent, making the immature protagonist Barbara more aware of the complex reality. His emergence leads to a full understanding of the relation between good and evil, the necessity to eradicate poverty, and the unity of great people of foresight to save the mass.
