With the rise of feminist criticism from 1960s, some feminists think Jane Austen has a feminist consciousness to some degree, but others think she has put too much emphasis on women’s dependence on males and conforms to the patriarchal soci⁃ety. This thesis aims to study Austen’s contradictory feminist views through analyzing Mr. Darcy, one of the male characters in Pride and Prejudice. They have long been neglected, but they do have unique individuality and important positions. This thesis al⁃so aims to refute both the views mentioned above.
