Liu Denghan argues that the construction of basic theories is the basis for the construction of new disciplines in literatures written in Chinese and it is for this reason that, subsequent to his completion of four literary histories or quasi-literary histories on Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and North America as part of the foundation-laying project, he has written a series of treatises on such discipline-related topics as naming, background, basis, characteristics, positioning, concepts and methods. The adoption of a cultural perspective is something else that characterizes Liu’s academic research as he turns his concerns with real life and social politics into things academic through‘culture’, his major achievements focused on cultural research on the Fujian-Taiwan relationship, with such creative concepts proposed as the‘Sea-mouth Culture’. Liu’s works are highly speculative as they benefit from his consistent dialectical thinking, balanced as he is between his concerns with universality and commonality as well as specialty and individuality. As a result, he has made such propositions of great importance as‘diverging and integration’,‘individualized literatures written in Chinese’and the idea that‘Taiwanese literature has enriched the literary creation of Chinese as a nation’. Dialectical thinking is adopted based on the characteristics of research objectives a nd their needs (such as the extraordinary complexities of the Taiwan issue)and, in return, is of special significance in Taiwanese literary studies and the resolution of Taiwan issues.%刘登翰认为基本理论的建构是华文文学新学科建设的根本，因此在完成作为奠基性工程的台湾、香港、澳门、北美等四部文学史或类文学史著作后，又撰写了广及学科的命名、背景、依据、性质、特征、定位、概念、方法等的系列论文。采用“文化”的视角则是刘登翰学术研究的另一特点。他通过“文化”将其对现实人生、社会政治的关切转化为学术，主要成果集中于闽台文化关系研究上，提出了“海口文化”等创新性概念。刘登翰的著作具有高度的思辨性，而这得益于他贯彻始终的辩证思维。如他既关注普遍性、共同性，更强调特殊性、个别性，由此提出了“分流与整合”、“个人化的华文文学”、“台湾文学丰厚了中华民族的文学创造”等具有重要意义的命题。辩证思维方式既是根据研究对象的特点和需要（如台湾问题的格外复杂性）而采用的，反过来对于台湾文学研究乃至台湾问题的解决，也具有某种特殊的意义。
