Before planning a greenway, it is important to understand the lessons from great planners of the past - both the good and the bad; to have a dear strategic approach and method; and to think about innovative ways to connect people with green spaces. Greenways embody the essence of a place through the interpretation of important cultural features, the protection and enhancement of critical ecological functions and linking neighborhoods through recreational opportunities. This paper will review some of the key lessons from early greenway planners, outline four key strategic principles for greenway planning, highlight the multipurpose planning method of the proposed New England Greenway Vision Plan and look at an array of innovative greenways that are being developed in the United States.
