Zhang Henshui had the dual identities of a novelist and a newsman, among which he based himself on the latter. Zhang’s novels have a noticeable touch of journalism, and the journalistic rhetoric was largely embodied in the two aspects of metaphoric expression and direct statement. The journalistic feature and rhetoric characteristic of his novel works have close relationships to his identity of a newsman and to the novels’ publication in newspaper supplements, which rendered the close interaction between the target readers and literary creation in terms of communications, and the social, popular, documentary and timely characteristics in terms of aesthetics. The special communicative methods endowed the novels with the unique aesthetic tastes.
