李觏不同意前人关于五行、五常和人之吉凶之间有必然联系的观点,他认为五行"相生未必吉,相克未必凶"。进而,李觏提出了"吉凶由人"的吉凶观,其所谓之"吉凶"并非狭义的个体之吉凶,而是以儒者的家国天下情怀,从大处立论,以天下平治,万民安康为吉。因此,沿袭着汉唐经学注重圣人礼乐教化之视野,李觏所言"吉凶由人"之"人"是指为天之所为的圣人,圣人起着榫接天人的不可或缺之作用。%Li Gou denies that there is any relationship between Wuxing,Wuchang and human's auspiciousness and inauspiciousness.In his view,intergeneration did not decide the auspiciousness,just as inter-restriction did not give inauspiciousness to people.In his idea,the auspiciousness and inauspiciousness were decided by people themselves.Within the scope of study of Confucian classics from Han dynasty to Tang dynasty,the "people" mentioned above was mainly about saints,who mortised heaven and ordinary people.
