《三国志通俗演义》中所塑造的魏延是一个十分耐人寻味的形象。他在刘备集团中既是勇猛的大将又始终被扣上了一顶叛将的帽子，这使魏延整体形象的塑造存在了一定的矛盾。下文将分析产生这种矛盾的几个原因。%Wei Yan’s image in "the Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is intriguing.
