In the inheritance and development of Lu Xun's academic research achievements, Wang Yao and Chen Pingyuan are prominent representatives, for the studies on the setup of the modern Chinese academic system initiated by Wang Yao and carried forward by Chen Pingyuan has once exerted a greater influence on relevant re-searches in the late 20th century. In Scholars' Lives in Medieval Times can be discerned not only Lu Xun's impact on Wang Yao regarding Lu Xun's idea of the literary creation and viewpoints of scholars in Wei and Jin dynasties but also Wang Yao's expansion and innovation on the basis of relevant studies on Lu Xun. In the wake of Wang Yao, Chen Pingyuan has studied the history of the 20th-century Chinese novels and surveyed the modern academic history, thus having shown his strong consciousness of the academic history and his perspective as a historian. Mo-reover, based on his inheritance of Lu Xun's view on writing the literary history, Chen Pingyuan has proposed his own theoretical supposition on writing the modern literary history and has made some beneficial attempt.
