On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the founding of IA,CASS, to develop the Chinese archaeological cause in the new century, the Institute held the “Celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the Founding of IA, CASS” and the “Chinese Archaeology and World Archaeology in the 21st Century” International Symposium. The meeting was opened in Beijing on 28th July, 2000, with the attendance of Mr. Li Tieying, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee, CPC, and President of CASS, who delivered a speech on the further development and flourishing of the antiquarian and archaeological cause in China. Among the attendants were also leaders of the CASS and State Administration of Cultural Heritage, experts and heads from antiquarian and archaeological institutions, universities and museums of more than 20 provinces, cities and autonomous regions, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and Taiwan, as well as specialists and scholars from Australia, Canada, the United States, Germany, Britain, Japan, the Republic of Korea and Spain. During the symposium, there were discussions on prehistoric archaeology, Xia-Shang-Zhou archaeology, Warring States and Qin-Han period archaeology, scientifico-technological archaeology, currently hotly-discussed subjects in archaeology, archaeological theories and methods, the combination of archaeology with natural sciences and its relationship with other disciplines of the humanities, the development tendency of archaeology towards its internationalization, and the development direction of world archaeology.
