Filtering of the Internet and its effect on K--12 public school classroom instruction.

This researcher designed this study to investigate the effect of Internet filtering on instruction in K-12 classrooms. This research is important to the students' academic success. This research asked how Internet use was affected by the use of filters and how terms, phrases, or sites are filtered on the district level, the state level, and the federal level. Data collection was accomplished by the use of two different survey tools. The surveys were administered to administrators, teachers, and technology personnel in order to gain a complete illustration of the uses of filtering software and the policies and practices in the participating school district. Data were collected from the surveys and compiled to show the extent of Internet use, how filtering of the Internet is accomplished, and finally to determine the effects of the filters on Internet use in the classroom. This research found that filters do affect use of the Internet in K-12 classrooms. Teachers do not use the Internet or they use it in a limited way, thereby affecting student learning through not being able to access materials on the Internet. The results of this research will enable the participating school district to analyze its own policies and guidelines, and if necessary, make adjustments. This research may also serve as a foundation for further study of Internet filtering practices in similar school districts within the same geographical region.
