Nowhere in Goethe's works is marriage invested with absolute authority. Yet, the question of how the ideal objectives of marriage are to be realized in an absolutist society is central, especially to the interpretation of the works of Weimar Classicism. This dissertation explores the meaning of the fact that Goethe's works portray a wide range of marital relationships while denying the possibility of lasting marital bliss (chapter I).;The ideologically critical examination yields striking results: In Hermann und Dorothea the idealized preconceptions of the middle class are mocked by the reality everyone tries to repress (IV). In the drama Die naturliche Tochter the dishonorable and egotistical actions of all characters frustrate the ideal of marriage and of all other institutions (V). The unique relationship between the main story and the six novellas of the Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten provides an example of how the nobility, while pronouncing itself a classical society, uses middle class preconceptions to legitimize its privileged status (VI). The short story Die guten Weiber emerges as a complex framework story that exposes the sacrificial role of women in marriage, society, and art (VII). The fact that not one of the thirty-two marriages mentioned in the novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre portrays a harmonious union provides proof that, in Goethe's classical works, marriage does not symbolize the utopia of a new aristocratic social system, but rather its irreversible decline (VIII). A final chapter discusses how the results of this study provide a new basis for interpretations of Die Wahlverwandtschaften and the Wanderjahre (IX).;Recent sociological research compellingly supports the hypothesis that Goethe's literary presentation of marriage shows a society in crisis and flux, criticizing the idealization and ideologization of the institution of marriage (II). The main part of this study seeks to separate the marital ideal from its realization as an institution, as both are portrayed in the five works under investigation. It attempts to determine the social sphere of all fictitious marriages by uncovering the connections between individual, couple, and society. One of the underlying methodological premises is that all actual historical and autobiographical connections remain unconsidered (III).
