This is an ambitious study combining examination of morphological and semantic analysis with historical and sociolinguistic factors. It is a multilingual, comparative, and diachronic approach to the study of a series of Mediterranean suffixes that share the consonantal pillar -rr-. The primary objective of the work is to determine the origin of these formatives as found in Castilian, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, Gascon, Sardinian, and the southern dialects of Italian.;The study makes important contributions to our understanding of the origins, meanings, and productivity of the -rr- suffixes, through the rigorous application of a methodology based on linguistic, geographical, historical, social, and dialectal factors.;Specifically, the study establishes a link between these suffixes and a non-Indo-European language, viz., Basque. In order to establish this link, it was necessary to undertake an in-depth examination of the Basque lexicon, Basque loan-words within Romance, and the historical links between Basque- and Romance-speaking populations in the Iberian Peninsula. Important parallels were found between Basque and Romance lexemes in -rr-, including application of the suffixes under similar morpho-phonemic conditions and correspondence in semantic fields. Significant patterns of diachronic productivity and dialectal distribution were also found.;An attempt is also made to explain the pan-Mediterranean distribution of the suffixes. Here various possibilities are considered, including attribution to a common Mediterranean substratum, multiple causation, and parallel development.;The work contains a complete presentation of the genesis, growth, and morphological and semantic characteristics of the -rr- suffixes in the languages mentioned. In order to achieve this objective for every language and suffix, all pertinent words were collected and classified according to different morphological criteria. This information is presented in a lengthy appendix.
