Learning and leading with technology: A handbook for educational leaders.

Questions of how best to train and prepare educational leaders to deal successfully with the multiple and complex issues related to educational technology are foremost on the minds of policy-makers and concerned citizens. This study examined educational leaders to determine how and why they use technology, how they perceive its usefulness, and how they develop their proficiency in technology. Twelve educational leaders from various positions including elementary teachers, administrators, college faculty, and senior level college administrators were interviewed. The study found basic computer applications such as word processing, Internet research, and e-mail to be the most common way in which educational leaders used technology. Most proficient educational leaders are self-taught, though many had access to technical support staff and mentors. The most common leadership challenges included issues in access, equity, maintenance, training, planning, hardware and software compatibility, budgeting, and instruction.
