Implementing literature circles: An experimental study in an English language learners' classroom.

The purpose of this study was to develop a comprehensive understanding of the effects of the implementation of literature circles in an ELL classroom. Literature circles were implemented each day over a nine-week period. Questionnaires were given to the students before and after the implementation of literature circles. A quasi-experimental study compared the control group to that of the treatment group. Students' perceptions of reading before and after the implementation of literature circles was analyzed through the study of the questionnaires, and standardized test scores were analyzed to monitor if there was an increase due to the implementation of literature circles. The participants of this study included 40 ELL students in the control group and 15 students in the treatment group. The results of this study were that the implementation of literature circles positively affected students' perceptions of reading, and the implementation of literature circles improved standardized reading test scores.
