Building teacher knowledge base: A study of teaching strategies and practices.

Best practice suggests that students learn in different ways. Because of Multiple Intelligence theory, teachers are advised to use a broad range of teaching strategies for reaching an ever-wider and more diverse range of learners. This study was conducted to identify the different teaching strategies teachers used to help all students learn, what strategies were effective, and what strategies were recommended as best practice according to the teaching guide and textbooks in junior high and elementary classrooms. Extensive observations of ten classrooms, analysis of textbooks, four surveys, and three interviews among teachers were undertaken, as a form of qualitative inquiry, to investigate the effectiveness of a certain teaching strategy. Most teachers used the combination of direct instruction, cooperative learning, and technology, as these mixed strategies were effective on students learning.
