摘要

二战后,新技术革命蓬勃兴起,经济全球发展,国际交流日益频繁,英语这门语言因英、美两国在世界领先的科学技术和强大经济实力而成了国际间交流的通用语言,称为“混合国际语言(linguafranca)”。在不同领域涉及到的英语言语表达具有该领域独特的语言风格与特点,要求人们掌握不同的技巧和达到一定的水平。二十世纪六十年代,“专门用途英语(ESP)”应运而生,开始在各行各业发挥重要作用,并迅速发展成为一门新兴、实用、革命性的学科。近四十年来,这一学科不仅在理论而且在实践上全面、快速发展,在各个领域发挥着重要作用。然而据本文作者调查,近年来,在中国外语界,尽管人们已经开始意识到英语的重要性,英语教学界关于外语教学理论的专著不少,但专论“专门用途英语教学/学习”的并不多,对ESP的研究尚未达到完善的地步,仍然缺少与之相关的比较全面、系统的研究与有效的应用。 本文作者针对这一现状,尝试对ESP作了综合、系统性理论研究。整篇文章围绕两条主要线索,将有关ESP细节串联成有机的整体,即:基于ESP理论在国内外英语教学、培训中的实践意义,从其历史发展角度出发。本文作者通过翔实的理论依据,辅以积累的数年教学实践经验,对ESP的方方面面作了详尽的探讨与描述,其中包括:ESP的内涵,ESP实用环境;尤其详细论述了其五个历史发展阶段及各家语言学派理论对它的影响;以及ESP在现实工作、生活与教学/学习中的实用价值及实践指导意义等。此外,作者还分析了ESP现状,ESP从业者的角色以及ESP与其它学科相结合应用于社会实践的特点,从而说明ESP是一门相当广泛的学科,与其它学科诸如应用语言学,二语习得等相交叉而共同发展,而不是狭义的、孤立的英语语言分支,而且这正是ESP的优势所在——其优势就在于ESP能够综合各学科之长,从而更有效地应用于社会现实。与此同时,在文章结尾部分,作者通过对教学实践过程中特定实例的综合分析说明,提出了ESP今后发展的可能趋势与假想蓝图。 总之,该文作者旨在突破、弥补中国ESP领域一个空白,在查阅研读了国内外诸多相关ESP的原版专著之后,从理论入手,辅以相应的实例以及ESP在中国现实状况的分析,尽可能综合全面地展示与ESP发展相关的细节以及影响因素,从而促进具有革命性的ESP事业不仅在中国英语教学领域,而且在其它相关的各行业都能够真正发展起来。 当然,由于作者站在特定的角度,以历史以及教育培训为基点来讨论研究ESP,因此难免对某些问题或某个方面疏漏或理解不深入透彻,还值得进一步深入、广泛的探索研究。
