从文化转向的角度对《水浒传》文化翻译策略的探讨

摘要

作为中国四大名著之一的《水浒传》，在我国及世界上享有很高的知名度。《水浒传》不仅被认为是一本封建社会的活字典，而且，它还向人们展示了那个特殊时代所具有的人性的全部特征。《水浒传》己被译为多种语言，在世界文坛上发挥着重要的作用。其中沙博理英译本则被认为是最好的译本。 语言与文化的关系是密不可分的，这使得文化的翻译在中国文学的传播中占据着重要的位置。语言只有在一定的文化背景下才有其意义，而文化则是语言存在和发展的基础。文化是一个我们从自然界和社会获取的，包括具体事物、知识、信念、艺术、道德、法律、习俗、能力和习惯的复杂体系。对文化的研究已经发展成为进行文学研究的新方法，因为文本与外部世界之间的联系是我们主要关心的议题。 基于对世界的不同理解，不同的学者对文化有着不同的分类。根据文化的形式与结构，文化可以分为物质文化，制度文化，行为文化与心理文化。 传统的翻译的定义已经发生了很大的变化:“翻译已经从单一的语言学定义发展为多重定义，恰如同文化的多重定义那样。作为信息传播的一种工具，我们对翻译的研究也应该摆脱狭窄的语言文字层面的束缚，从而将其置于更广阔的跨文化语境之下”(王宁，2005:5)。本论文针对有关文化转向的一些重要议题进行了阐述，其中包括:文化转向的起源、形成、发展，文化转向对翻译施加的影响及其对翻译界所产生的两大冲击。这两大冲击分别是:现代的翻译观念中，翻译意向的选择和译者所扮演的新角色。为了进一步研究文化转向，语言的几大功能在此也有所彰显。 最后，本篇论文应用了大量篇幅来重点研究其中心议题:从文化转向的角度来探讨沙博理英译本中文化翻译的策略问题。在对异国文化的翻译过程中，毫无疑问会有各种各样的问题出现，其中一些关键的问题包括:在汉译英的过程中文化词汇的空缺现象，汉语及英语中由于语法的不同而产生的翻译问题，同一思想在不同文化中的不同的表达方式，同一客观事物在源语与目的语中引起的不同的联想，以及两种语言之间由于不同的发音系统所产生的问题等等。《水浒传》的译者沙博理因其对汉语的精通而闻名于国内外。针对以上这些问题，沙博理在《水浒传》的英译本中主要采用了八种策略来对此巨著进行翻译。这八种策略分别是:直译、直译加解释、意译、意译加注解、概括、省略、音译加注解、以及套译。 随着全球化的发展和政治、经济、文化交流的日益增加，翻译在国际合作中日渐发挥着关键的作用。现如今，越来越多的国内外学者开始关注翻译与文化之间的关系，文化的全球化也在挑战传统的翻译研究。文化学派认为，翻译已不再局限于语言学的层面上，而是转向了文化翻译的研究。文化转向不仅拓宽了翻译研究的范围，而且提出了新的研究思路。本文旨在强调文化研究在翻译中的重要性，并从文化转向的角度对《水浒传》中汉语文化的英译方法进行了着重分析。
