《好逑传》的英译本研究

摘要

《好逑传》，又名《第二才子好逑传》、《侠义风月传》、《侠义好逑传》，具体成书时间不详，作者署名“名教中人”。全书共计4卷18回，讲述了大名府秀才铁中玉和水冰心的爱情故事。《好逑传》故事紧凑，不落俗套，人物形象较鲜明，是明清才子佳人小说中具有代表性的上乘之作。在十八世纪早期，《好逑传》成为最早被翻译的中国古典长篇小说。 然而目前的中外研究中仍有很多空白。在本文作者检索到的43篇文献中，大部分围绕1761年托马斯·珀西出版的译本展开探讨，仅有5篇对1761年托马斯·珀西译本与1829年德庇时的译本进行对比研究。其他三个译本难以寻到只言片语。 在本文中，作者集齐全部5个译本，首次对5个译本进行对比分析。此外，多数研究者从某一翻译视角出发，如目的论、语言与文化角度等，对《好逑传》的英译本进行评价。但作者认为，任何译本都是当时目的语社会文化环境、译者身份以及源文本交融的综合产物，三者不可偏废。 本人在译本研究中采用了翻译史研究及文本分析的方法。本文首先梳理了《好逑传》的欧译史，从文本出发探讨各自的版本特点。因国内学界对1761年托马斯·珀西译本与1826年德庇时译本的相关研究较为完善且出现了较为权威的研究成果，因此本文以这两个译本为范本，研究两个节译本与之在章节及情节编排、人物形象塑造和注释上的差异，并从目的语社会文化环境、译者身份以及源文本这三个角度探讨版本间差异的原因；之后，以1761年托马斯·珀西译本、1826年德庇时译本与1926年贝德福德·琼斯转译本为对象从回目翻译、诗歌翻译及章节调整三个角度进行文本对比研究，并探讨了版本差异原因。 研究发现：《好逑传》的五个译本特点鲜明，均呈现比较大的独立性和差异性；其次，《好逑传》的翻译体现了文化与文本的一体性，是一种文化认同、文化过滤、文化阐释、文化承载的文本再现；再次，《好逑传》的英译本从中国文化的百科全书，到中国小说的样本，再到中国风情，最终成为一本有优秀写作技巧的小说，这也从侧面体现了西方人对中国认知史；最后，《好逑传》作为首部引起西方关注、并被译成西文的中国古典小说，拉开了中国文学西译的帷幕，并成为其他中国古典小说翻译的效仿对象，体现了西方从依靠儒家经典到逐渐重视古代文学的转变。
