DEVELOPMENT of a PROTO-TYPE PV DECK-SHADING SYSTEM

A PV deck-shading system has been designed for pre-wiring and pre-fabrication techniques to increasequality control of factory production and reduce site labour costs. The system has a wider range ofapplications but is customised to suit the 7.5m × 9.6m planning grid of Hong Kong (HK) Schools.Performance under high wind-load has been a critical factor in the design necessitating wind tunnelmeasurements and module wind-load capacity tests. The robust, lightweight and low-maintenance system isparticularly designed for latitude 22o where high altitude sun and close-spacing of modules can maximizesummer electricity yield with 33% increased module area. The system is suited to 330 × 1300mmdimensioned modules, Copper Indium Diselenide technology and particularly the ST40 module fromSiemens Solar. The system consists of factory fabricated trusses supporting paired strings of modules. Eachtruss interlocks to the preceding truss through the hub which also contains the customised junction-box.Rapid-tooling process has developed the design to facilitate local small-scale production of the customizedjunction-box. The system and its electrical components are intended as starters to the development of a localPV components industry.
