The Practical Evaluation for Radio Resource Usage Efficiency of Wireless Communication Network

Radio channel is not only the most valuable resource but also one of the most important investment parts of the wireless network resource. Considering the balance of operation cost and economic performance, it is necessary and important to analyze and evaluate the radio usage efficiency reasonably. Erlang-B (EB) table, describing the relationship of traffic and channels in the communication network, has been used widely during the process of network design and planning. However, mobility and cellular technology make traffic character of mobile communication network complex and uncertain. Handoff is one special traffic feature for mobile communication. It is one serious factor to cause the cell blocking that should be considered in deducing the carrying capacity of the radio channel. This research is developed on the basis of analyzing the traffic carrying declining property of radio channel in the cellular network. One kind of radio channel usage method called equivalent channel divided (ECD) is put forward in the paper. One compound parameter, equivalent fading factor (EFF), is introduced to describe the radio channel carrying capacity with declining property because of the complex traffic model in mobile communication network. On the basis of ECD method, the improved Erlang-B formula (I-EB) is introduced to achieve the relative multi-dimension EB table (MD-EB) as engineering reference. Also one practical application of MD-EB is given in this paper.
