Optical reflectometric techniques for troubleshooting of fiber optic assembly modules are introduced in this presentation. Fault points in an optical fiber assembly module introduce reflections and discontinuities in backscattering. Optical reflectometry measures the distributed reflection and backscattering profile as a function of location within the module. By comparing the result profile to a pre-stored standard profile, which is prepared by measuring a standard model of the module, existence and locations of fault points can be found. Based on comparison of principles and performances of current methods, it is pointed out that the coherent optical frequency domain reflectometry is capable of being used for the troubleshooting. Preliminary demonstrations are presented.
