The phenomenon of on-off intermittency has been observed experimentally in a diode laser with two external cavities. The control parameter is the length of the external cavity. We have demonstrated that mean laminar phase ("off" state) can be controlled by changing the velocity at which the control parameter passes through the bifurcation point. Power-law scaling of the average laminar time with a critical exponent of -1 has been found near onset of intennittency as a function of the amplitude or frequency of the external modulation applied to cavity detuning.
